Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna was established in 1983 as an autonomous organisation on the pattern of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The institute was established for achieving a number of aims and objectives and the institute has already established as one of the premier medical institutions in the state. The institute has been providing medical education to the students of Bihar and also conducting health and medicinal research programmes, since inception. The institute has been working to develop clinical research centres for conducting investigation on the problems of human health and diseases peculiar to and prevent in this part of the country for several years.
 
The institute is also working for developing Community Health Research Centre to study and finding out solutions to the problems of health of the community with particular emphasis on reproductive biology and population control. Developing research and training in basic sciences relevant to the problems and needs of the Community is also one of the most important objectives of the IGIMS, Patna.
