Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore was established in 1989 by the department of science and technology of the Government of India. Since 2002, the centre is recognized as a Deemed to be University by the University Grants Commission, and students’ degrees are awarded directly by JNCASR. Researchers at the centre are divided into seven units, chemistry and physics of materials, engineering mechanics, evolutionary and organizmal biology, molecular biology and genetics, theoretical sciences, educational technology and geodynamics. The institute also have two off-campus units at the Indian Institute of Science, the chemical biology and condensed matter theory units. The faculty and students benefit from interacting with scientists at the many research institutions in the greater Bangalore area. The intellectual atmosphere at JNCASR is further livened by a regular stream of visitors from all over the world, who contribute to spirited scientific discussions at seminars, conferences and summer schools. The aim of the centre is to pursue and promote world-class scientific research and training at the frontiers of science and engineering.

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) is a multidisciplinary research institute situated in Jakkur, a locality north of Bangalore, India. It is relatively young yet well-known around the Globe. Our mandate is to pursue and promote world-class research and training at the frontiers of Science and Engineering covering broad areas ranging from Materials to Genetics. It provides a vibrant academic ambience hosting more than 200 Researchers. The Centre is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and is a deemed university. Infrastructural facilities available at the IISc and those being developed by the Centre are used by scientists of both IISc and JNCASR. At the IISc Campus, the Centre has a Lecture Hall, Visitors' House (JAWAHAR) and Guest Rooms catering to the academic visitors to the Centre and to the IISc. A small student hostel is also located on this campus, in addition to some staff housing.
