Institute for Forest Genetic and Tree Breeding the genetic diversity of forest tree species and carry out tree improvement of major plantation species through breeding, biotechnological interventions and appropriate silvicultural packages with the objective of increasing the productivity of our forests and plantations to meet the requirements of the forest fringe communities and forest based industries besides restoring the ecology of degraded areas to expand the forest and tree cover and improving the environmental quality.

Regional: To attend to the forestry research requirements of the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala and the Union Territories of Puducherry , Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

To generate , preserve , disseminate and advance knowledge , technologies and solutions for addressing issues related to forests and promote linkages arising out of interactions between people , forests and environment on a sustained basis through research , education and extension.
