Poompuhar College, established in 1964 by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department, Government of Tamilnadu, is located near the coastal area around 5 km from the Bay of Bengal, on the northern bank of sacred river Cauvery in Melaiyur - Poompuhar, Sirkali Taluk in Nagapattinam District. The College was inaugurated by His Highness Maharaja of Mysore Shri. Jayachamaraja Wadaiyar on 2nd May, 1964. The College is affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. The College was recognized by UGC under 2(f) and 12 (B) of UGC Act in 1998. The College is an aided college receiving grants from the Government of Tamilnadu. The College also offers a few self -financing courses.

The College is spread over 5.98 acres of land and caters to the educational needs of mainly the rural students living in and around Poompuhar village limits. The College also has 16.31 acres of land being used as Playground and 12.39 acres as vacant land. At present 2051 (1030 boys and 1021 girls) students are studying in the College of which 1522 are in aided College and 529 students have enrolled in self financing courses. Most of the students are first generation learners of low economic status belonging to SC, MBC and Backward Classes living in this rural area. Their parents are agricultural labourers or fishermen or daily wage earners. The goals and objectives of the College are to provide higher education to the economically and socially backward students of this rural area. The College is committed to its mission and vision.
