About College

Balagarh B.K. Mahavidyalaya, Hooghly was established in 1985 and is an affiliated college. The College was founded to provide higher education in the rural area of Hooghly District. The area was dominated mostly by scheduled castes and other backward communities. The College is named after Bijoy Krishna Modak, a noted freedom fighter and educationist of the area who was instrumental in motivating the villagers to establish the College. The aim of the college is to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need in this era of information and teaching. The College is a grant in aid institution of West Bengal Govt. It is recognized by UGC under section 2(f) and 12 B of the UGC Act 1956. (letter No F.8-29/91 CPP Dt. 24-11-91 and letter No F-8-29/91 (CPP-1) 18th Oct. 1993). The College offers under-graduate courses in Arts, Science and commerce stream. The college is well equipped with all modern facilities.

The College comes under the University of Burdwan. This University was started in 1960 with Sukumar Sen as its first Vice-chancellor. It occupies an exalted place amongst the universities of West Bengal. It has been awarded with 4 star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to acknowledge the contribution of Burdwan University in the educational development of the state. The University of Burdwan offers a wide array of courses to the students. The University is facilitated with various type of modern infrastructure.
