About College


Named after Basanti Devi, the wife of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das and an eminent woman nationalist leader, Basanti Devi College was established in August 1959, with the mission of empowerment of women. It is the first sponsored girls’ college by the Government of West Bengal under scheme 2F of the UGC.

Basanti Devi College of today is a premier girls’ college, advantageously situated in the busy commercial locality of Gariahat, the heart of South Calcutta. Being very close to  Ballygunge Railway Station, a junction station of  Sealdah South Section , the College is close to the gateway of the rural district of South 24-Parganas. The College thus has the advantage of catering the students from the highly urban areas of Kolkata as well as the remote rural areas of outskirts. A large fraction of our students from the rural areas come from the economically weaker agricultural families, scheduled caste and tribe and other minorities families and also from other backward classes.

The main goal of the College is to equip the enrolled students with, academic degrees, and to help them to develop a sense of self respect and self reliance, empowerment and emancipation, irrespective of the social strata of their origin. This is particularly important for female students coming from the above-mentioned rural areas.
