About College

HOPE (Handicapped Orientation Programme and Education) was started as a Day Care centre in the year 1988 in a rented house in Bidhan Nagar, Durgapur with 6 children and two special educators. HOPE was the first special school of its kind in the area, catering to the needs of all categories of disability, except visually impaired. HOPE was blessed by Rev. Mother Teresa on the 4th day of its opening.

Within a short time the school had to be shifted to a proper school building as the number of special children increased to more than 50. The school building was provided by a Public sector Undertaking free of charge.

With further increase in the number of special children and considering that some of the special children have to come from longer distances a second school was started in the year 1996 at the other end of Durgapur and about 15kms away from the first school. The total no. of students in the three schools now is 294, including the 22 children in the Extension Centre at Laudoha.
HOPE is registered with Registrar of societies, Govt. of West Bengal. It is under  the ageis of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India and is grant in aided by it since 1991-92.HOPE is also registered with commissioner of Disabilities Govt. of West Bengal and with National Trust, New Delhi.
