About College

Kohima College was established on the 9th August 1967. Till then, there was no college in Kohima offering studies in the branch of Humanities. Feeling the urgent need of such a college to meet the aspirations of the upcoming youth, in particular the local youths to pursue higher education at a cheap cost and within their own hometown, four large hearted persons of Kohima Village, Dr. Neilhouzü Kire, Dr. Satuo Sekhose, Mr. Vibeilie Solo and Mr. Vilalhoulie Belho rose to the occasion and lit the torch of Kohima College, the first private college in the capital city of Nagaland.

With the launching of the college, classes were run in the evenings in the old Middle English School which was located partly in the old college site and that of the present Union Baptist Church. In 1969 the college was asked to vacate the school building whereupon classes were shifted to an old dilapidated primary school building in Mission Compound. In 1971, the college was allowed back to the Middle School and soon the school building along with the site was allotted to the College. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, a member of the Governing Body of the College and then Minister of Education, Govt. of Nagaland, was instrumental in negotiating this settlement solving the dilemma of inadequacy of space.
