Pandit Raghunath Murmu Smriti Mahavidyalaya, Bankura was established in 1986 as undergraduate college with six pass courses. The college came into existence on a land donated by the local people to cater to the needs of the students in three blocks viz. Sarenga, Simlapal and Raipur, with an aim to disseminate higher education to a large number of rural students, a substantial number of which belongs to scheduled tribe, scheduled caste and other disadvantaged and marginalized section of the society. It obtained UGC recognition under section 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC act on 2-1-1992. The college offers under graduate courses in Arts and Science Stream.

The College comes under the University of Burdwan. This University was started in 1960 with Sukumar Sen as its first Vice-chancellor. It occupies an exalted place amongst the universities of West Bengal. It has been awarded with 4 star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to acknowledge the contribution of Burdwan University in the educational development of the state. The University of Burdwan offers a wide array of courses to the students. The University is facilitated with various type of modern infrastructure.
