Silchar Ploytechnic

Situated in the threshold of Manipur,Tripura & Mizoram the Barak Valley of Assam had a modest start with technician education when Silchar Polytechnic was established in 01/05/1960 in Meherpur, now a rapidly developing area of Silchar about 4 km. from the heart of the Town on the Silchar-Hailakandi road. Silchar Polytechnic has come a long way with excellence and credibility in imparting Technical Education since its inception. That was a time when Assam was having only a few Institutions of its kind and there was a great dearth for technical personnel in the state. The Institution was established with the objective of preparing personnel for manning the Engineering Departments and Industries of the country which require adequate knowledge in know-how and do-how of Engineering and Technology.

   Earlier in the same establishment , a Junior Technical School was functioning which ceased to work to make way for starting Silchar Polytechnic to cater to the need of the mounting demand in second plan period for the middle level engineering manpower in the State and in the Country. The whole estabilshment including Land, Buildings, Staff, Machineries and Equipments,Office etc. of the defunct technical school was accredited to Silchar Polytechnic. One of the pioneer institutes of Assam,Silchar Polytechnic started its journey on 1st May 1960,in a very modest way with scanty staff members and with Civil engineering as the lone department. Today it feels proud to be one of the best institutions with good infrastructure and well motivated staffs.Spread over 15 hectares of pleasent land area,Silchar Polytechnic is a unique institutional complex with good academic environment and result.

   The opening intake capacity of this Institute was 60 and the great interest as well as the demand at that time can be percieved from the fact that all the seats were filled in by the 60 pioneers. Out of this 60 intake 35 could move without loss upto final year and 27 came out seccessfully in the Ist Final Examination held in 1963 under State Council For Technical Education, Assam.

   With this humble begining the Polytechnic has grown now to an intake capacity of220 with its 04 branches of Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. It is a purely Government Institution approved byAICTE. The curricula are being reviewed regularly and upgraded keeping pace with the fast changing scenario of Technical Education in India today. 

Silchar Polytechnic was selected by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India in 1986 for Community Polytechnic Scheme to provide technical guidance to the poorer pupil of rural areas by utilizing Institutional infrastructure and expertise and thereby encouraging self-employment and entrepreneurship.

  The Institution is performing different activities under its ISTE Chapter, ISTE Students Chapter and Students' chapter of Institution of Engineers (India) for keeping themselves aware about the activities of the professional bodies.

  In their last visit on April 1999,the Expert Committee of AICTE views "Overall condition of the Institute is excellent". 

Silchar, the District Head Quarter of Cachar District of the State of Assam is well connected by Road, Rail and Air. The place where the Institute is located is 6 km from the the Bus Stand, 8 km from the Railway Station (Tarapur) and 30 km from the Airport (Kumbhirgram).
