Southern Health Improvement Samity (SHIS) Southern Health Improvement Samity was established in 1979byagroupof young activists under motivation of Brother Gaston Dayanand. Since1980 SHIS has been at the forefront of the Non Governmental efforts in the area of health, Education and economic empowerment. It has always worked in close co-operation and coordination with Official agencies and programmes, both at the Center and in the State. Since1986 French writer Dominique Lapierre has been the benefactor.
 
In the area of health SHIS is providing comprehensive (24X7)primary health care including 24 Hour referral . Facility based Basic Emergency Obstetric (EmOC) and New born Care under RCH.II to the 40 islands of Sunderbans via4 mobile boat clinics, implementing the RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme) DOTS strategy in the seven Tuberculosis Units (TU) and providing the technical support in Strengthening referral linkages from the Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre (lCTC) to RNTCP Centers (Cross Referral Mechanism). SHIS Ashadeep the micro credit division dedicated for the empowerment of women aims to actively contribute in the creation of a gender-just society and provide women with guidance, input, and support to transform themselves into facilitators of the process of self-realization and empowerment. SHIS intervenes in 40 villages among the predominantly agricultural population. SHIS Ashadeep has been working with morethan3500 10 Self-help groups, with a total membership of more than 35000 women.
