Tarakeswar Degree College, Hooghly is a relatively new college as compared to other colleges in the neighboring. It was established twenty years ago on 5th September-a day celebrated as the teachers' Day in memory of Dr. Sarbapally Radhakrishnan. The support from the Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Sri Anil Basu and Hon’ble Minister of Fire & Emergency Services Department, Govt. of West Bengal, Sri Pratim Chatterjee, Sri Shankar Ray Chowdhury, Ex-General of Army & Member of Rajya Sabha, who made liberal contributions from their Local Area Development Funds, became instrumental in shaping the college. The college was recognized under Section 2F & 12B of the UGC on Jan 24, 1991. The college has made conspicuous progress in terms of physical expansion, diversification of the subject combinations and number of students getting enrolled.

The College is affiliated to the University of Burdwan. This University was started in 1960 with Sukumar Sen as its first Vice-chancellor. It occupies an exalted place amongst the universities of West Bengal. It has been awarded with 4 star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to acknowledge the contribution of Burdwan University in the educational development of the state. The jurisdiction of the university spreads across five districts of West Bengal - Burdwan, Hooghly (excluding Serampore Subdivision), Bankura, Birbhum and Purulia, nourishing more than 100 colleges.
