About College

Thakur Panchanan Mahila Mahavidyalaya is the only girls’ college in the district of Cooch Behar, West Bengal. It was established on the 18th day of September, 1981. It is affiliated to the University of North bengal. Initially the college started with a few students at Sunity Academy, the Government School for girls. It was shifted to a semi-permanent structure near Rajbari Campus on 2nd July, 1982. The foundation stone of the present college building at the new site was laid by Sri Jyoti Basu, the then Hon’ble Chief Minister, Govt. of West Bengal on 2nd December, 1997. The inaugural ceremony of the newly constructed college building is being held on the auspicious 25th Baisakh, Rabindranath Tagore’s Birthday 9th May, 1999. Late Kamal Guha, the former social worker and former MIC, Agriculture, Govt. of West Bengal was one of those who extended their whole hearted co-operation to establish this institution.

     We are grateful to Sri Amar Ray Pradhan, Ex. MP, Cooch Behar, Sri Debabrata Biswas, Ex. MP (Rajya Sabha), Sri Tarini Roy, sitting MP, Rajya Sabha, Backward Classes Welfare Deptt., Govt. of West Bengal, Sri Dipak Sarkar sitting MLA, Cooch Behar (N), The DPI Govt. of West Bengal and the District Administration, UGC & University of North Bengal whose active and sincere co-operation has made it possible for the college to get the present firm footing and newlook with a promising future lying in store for it. The sole aim of the college is to provide quality education and equal opportunity to women.

      The college obtained UGC’s recognition under section 2(f) & 12(B) in December 1993 and was accredited in 2004 by NAAC and was awarded C+ Ceretificate. The college is the first in the district to undergo the process of accreditation. Re-accreditation is due in 2010.

The college offers only B. A. Honours and General Course with the subject option of B. A. Honours in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science and B. A. general in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Economics, Sanskrit and Geography. Sanskrit (H) and Geography (H) are likely to be introduced from the Academic Session (2010-2011). Under Career Oriented Programme (C.O.P.) self-financing courses are running at a very nominl course fees. Subjects offered are Women Studies, Communicative English, Computer Application, Travel & Tourism Management. Courses offered are Certificate, Diploma and Advance Diploma. These programs contribute to the goal of preparing students to compete in the global economy. A Computer Laboratory with 14 computers purchased with UGC and MP grant has been opened for the students of Computer Application Course. Thakur Panchanan Mahila mahavidyalaya is trying to promote universal and equitable access to education and developing students the knowledge, confidence and requisite skills to become the lifelong learners and economic, competitors in a dynamic global market place.

Thakur Panchanan Mahila Mahavidyalaya is located in the heart of the District Town of Cooch Bbehar adjacent to Rabindra Bhavan. It is about 5 km. from New Cooch Behar Railway Station. Town Railway Station is only 1 km. from the college.

Cooch Behar, the Heritage Town is connected to all important cities of India. It was reigned by the Maharajas of Cooch Behar who maintained the traditions of granting patronage to learning and letters and laid the foundation of education in ancient Cooch Behar almost 180 years back. Cooch Behar is a Bordertown and surrounded by Nepal, Bhutan in North and Bangladesh in South and East.
The nearest airport is at Bagdogra which is nearly 130 km. from Cooch Behar town. Thakur Panchanan Mahila Mahavidyalaya is located in the heart of the District Town of Cooch Bbehar adjacent to Rabindra Bhavan.
