About College

The Regional Engineering College, Durgapur, was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. It is a joint venture of the Govt. Of India and Govt. Of West Bengal, and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. The Minister In-charge of Higher Education of the W.B Govt. is the present Chairman of the Board which includes representatives from the Central and State Governments., AICTE, UGC, University of Burdwan, IIT Kharagpur, Industries and the Faculty.

The college is located about 160 KMs north-west of Calcutta on the Howrah-Delhi Railway-Route and overlooking the great Grand-Trunk Road. The college spreads over an area of 187 acres of land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present about 1250 boys and 150 girls reside in five boys' hostels and one girls' hostel. The annual undergraduate intake is about 330 students. The college is affiliated to the University of Burdwan, which awards B.E., M.Tech and Ph.D. degrees to our students after their successful completion of the specified courses. The college imparts education in the disciplines of Chemical, Civil, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering. Following a procedure laid down by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, Regional Engineering College, Durgapur, selects candidates for its own admission and 16 other RECs who admit such students on the basis of state wise quota. The college reserves two seats for admission of physically handicapped candidates from W.B. in addition to its normal intake. A number of seats are also reserved for Scheduled Caste/Tribes candidates from W.B. and also from other state on state-wise quota. Seats are also reserved for the wards of personnel from paramilitary forces who have been killed or permanently disabled during war or hostility.

In addition to its sanctioned intake a few seats are also reserved by the Central Govt. for foreign students etc. Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India and the India Council of Cultural relations are the authorities to select candidates from the children of the staff serving in Indian missions abroad and the candidates for general cultural scholarship scheme, TCS of Colombo plan and Commonwealth scholarship etc.
